Pros Cons
-Allowed for lighting - Cost a lot of money to -Made tasks easier install in buildings and -Stimulated business homes. -Eventually allowed for electricity to -Still used a lot of power be provided in houses and buildings - Weren't recycled in 1880s -Allowed for further innovation of light -Produced a lot of waste and electricity in the future Contrary to popular belief Thomas Edison didn't invent the light bulb but he did greatly improve upon previous ideas. The light bulb had been initially created about 50 years before but these light bulbs had many flaws. They had an incredibly short life, used too much energy, gave off too much heat, were dangerous, were very expensive to produce, and overall just did not work well at all. In 1878 Thomas Edison began serious research on how to develop a practical incandescent light bulb. Thomas Edison had many attempts at trying to find a sufficient filament for the light bulb. After trying various materials Edison applied for a patient on January 27th 1880 for a cotton fiber filament. This light bulb filament allowed for 13 hours of continuous light. Thomas was not satisfied with this though. He continued his research and experimentation and later found out that a carbon filament was the best solution. This new filament allowed for 1,200 hours of light. Thomas Edison's first large scale application of this was in New York city on September 4th, 1882 when 25 building were successfully illuminated.
Thomas Edison was born on Feburary 11, 1847. As a child in school his teachers called him "difficult" and young Edison was pulled out of public school and home schooled by him mother. Thomas had a huge apetite for learning and developed skills at a young age that would help him out a lot throughout his life. When Edison was 12 years old he began publishing his own newspapers and sold them along the grand trunk railroad line. He also started doing science experiments in the railroad cars. In 1869 Edison created his first invention, the universal stock printer, which was a improved stock ticker. Thomas Edison developed many business partners with large business owners selling his products to them. By 1870 he established himself and a full time inventor and one of the best.
